One Flesh, Not Many Part 4

What the Bible Really Says About Multiple Wives

So Is Having Two Wives a Sin? Putting the Whole Bible Together

Now we come to the main question:

Can we actually say from Scripture that having two wives at the same time is wrong?

I believe we can.

But we need to make the case carefully.

We shouldn’t ignore the difficult passages.

The Old Testament clearly records men having multiple wives.

The Mosaic Law addresses households with multiple wives.

Some prominent biblical figures practiced polygamy.

Those facts should be acknowledged.

But none of these change the bigger biblical teaching about marriage.

Start at creation:

Genesis 2:24: “They shall be one flesh.”

Listen to Jesus:

Matthew 19:5: “They twain shall be one flesh.”

Listen to Paul:

1 Corinthians 7:2: “Let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”

Look at the standard for leadership:

1 Timothy 3:2: “The husband of one wife.”

Then look at the Gospel picture:

Ephesians 5:31–32: “They two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”

The Bible’s message about marriage stays consistent.

Creation → one man and one woman.

Jesus → two becoming one flesh.

The apostles → reciprocal husband-and-wife covenant faithfulness.

The Church → one-woman faithfulness modeled by its leaders.

The Gospel → Christ and His bride.

What about Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon?

They demonstrate something else:

God’s grace toward imperfect people should never be mistaken for God’s approval of everything imperfect people do.

This difference is important for more than just polygamy.

If we decide what’s right or wrong just by looking at what people in the Bible did, we’ll end up with bad theology.

Instead, we ask:

What did God command?

What did God establish?

What did Jesus affirm?

What did the apostles teach?

What does the whole counsel of Scripture reveal?

And concerning marriage, Jesus gives us perhaps the most important interpretive statement:

Matthew 19:8: “From the beginning it was not so.”

That should guide Christians on where to find the true meaning of marriage.

Not to ancient culture.

Not to kings.

Not to patriarchal customs.

Not to what society permits.

Not even to every behavior practiced by biblical heroes.

Back to the beginning.

God created a man.

God created a woman.

God brought them together.

And God said the two would become one flesh.

This isn’t just an old tradition.

It’s the foundation Jesus used for His teaching on marriage.

Final Thought

The question isn’t simply:

“Can I find somebody in the Bible who had two wives?”

You absolutely can.

The real question is:

“Can I find where God established multiple wives as His design for marriage?”

That’s a completely different question.

And when we let Scripture explain itself, the biblical pattern is clear:

One husband.
One wife.
One covenant.
One flesh.

Other things might show up in the Bible, but they don’t replace the pattern set “from the beginning.”
